The director’s most ambitious project till date was supposed to be the first film where King Khan and Mr Perfectionist would be seen together
When the hatke director first started pitching his film, Bombay Velvet, he wanted to cast Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan together. Had his dream come true, this would probably have been Bollywood’s biggest casting coup which would have created history, even before release and irrespective of BO success. This was the buzz doing the rounds during the release of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey in 2009. Somewhere down the line Anurag Kashyap probably realised the epic scale of his film if he brought the two rivals together. Not only would he have the challenge of re-creating the Bombay (not Mumbai) of the 1950s, but would also have to deal with the humongous egos and super-sharp brains of Bollywood’s biggest stars. Apparently SRK (who had the script of Kashyap’s No Smoking for a very long time) was dropped from the wish list first. Then we heard that the director was in hot pursuit of Aamir while they were shooting ads for a cellphone brand. Some insiders also said that Kashyap was too nervous to get Aamir on board thanks to the star’s ‘involvement’ in all his films. But for now, all we know is that John Abraham (who played K in No Smoking) and Naseeruddin Shah have been signed up. Wethinks it is a smart decision on Anurag’s part, because a known devil is better than an unknown one who may just take over the reins!
