The Satya actor reveals that working with superstar Amitabh Bachchan has become an easy experience over the years
Manoj Bajpayee had teamed up with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Aks. Almost a decade later the Satya actor shares screen space with the Big B again in Aarakshan. But unlike earlier times, Manoj says working with the superstar is no longer intimidating. “Definitely the ice starts melting when you work together again,” says the actor and quickly adds, “I have always been in awe of him – I can’t deny it. But I feel much easier working with him now. Actually he makes the atmosphere much friendlier.” Manoj says Amitabh and he rehearsed several times. He reveals, “We rehearsed whenever required – at times, seven to 10 times – which also helped me get comfortable. And I enjoyed working with him. He comes prepared and is so disciplined that everyone around him follows suit.” It comes as no surprise that even today the superstar does his homework. In fact, while he was shooting for the Prakash Jha film, the senior Bachchan often tweeted about how he was preparing for his role. Amitabh plays an idealistic college principal and Bajpayee’s character is of a capitalist entrepreneur, who represents the corrupt educational system. Of course, the two have a face-off of sorts in the film. Aarakshan revolves around a sensitive subject – the reservation system. Ask Manoj if he thinks cinema can bring about a revolution in the society, and he opines, “I think cinema can be a part of the changing times, but it cannot solely create a revolution. A film like Aarakshan and so many other topical films; they can be part of the change or debate”.
